Why do new boots smell so strong?

The "heady" scent of new boots is actually a "grand chorus" of various materials and chemicals mixed together during the shoe-making process. This is not only normal but also, to some extent, a sign that the boots are brand new.
Specifically, this odor primarily stems from the following aspects:
Glue and Adhesives (Primary Sources)
The modern footwear industry (whether for sneakers or leather boots) extensively uses high-strength industrial adhesives to bond the soles, uppers, and linings. These adhesives typically contain volatile organic compounds (such as solvents like formaldehyde and benzene), which cannot dissipate when the boots are first manufactured and sealed in shoeboxes. Once opened, the odor becomes extremely intense.
Leather Tanning and Processing
If it's genuine leather boots, the scent will be more complex
Tanning agents: The transformation of raw hides into finished leather requires a "tanning" process. Particularly in chrome tanning (used for most leather products on the market), chromium salts and other chemical agents are employed, which leave a distinctive chemical odor.
Dyes and finishes: To achieve vibrant colors, waterproofing, or wear resistance, various chemical coatings and dyes are applied to the leather surface.
Rubber and synthetic materials
Outsole: Many boots have rubber or polyurethane soles, which are petroleum byproducts that inherently emit a strong rubbery odor.
Synthetic leather/lining: If the boots are made with synthetic fibers or artificial leather (PU leather), these plastic polymers may also emit odors during the production process.
sealed packaging
After the boots are produced, they are usually immediately packed into plastic bags and sealed in shoeboxes. This means all the gases released by the aforementioned materials are "locked" inside the box. When you open it for the first time, the long-accumulated gases will rush out.
How to quickly remove the odor from new boots?
Although it's normal for new shoes to have a smell, if the odor is strong, you can try the following methods to speed up the dissipation of the smell
Ventilation and Drying (Most Effective): Place the boots in a cool, ventilated area (such as the shaded side of a balcony) to dry for a few days. Note: Avoid exposing genuine leather boots to direct sunlight, as it can cause the leather to crack or fade.
Adsorption method: Insert some old newspapers (the ink in newspapers has an adsorption effect) or place activated charcoal bags or dry tea bags in the boots. Leaving them overnight can help absorb some odors and moisture.
Baking soda: Place a small amount of baking soda in a breathable cloth bag and stuff it into your shoes to effectively eliminate odors.
