What should I do if the sole of my hiking boots comes off during the hiking?

The hiking boots that have accompanied you on your adventures for many years may inevitably accidentally develop a loose sole or peel off the glue. What should you do?

Before departure
Before each departure, it is essential to conduct a thorough inspection. Hiking boots that have been stored at home for a long time are at high risk of having their midsoles powderize and become unglued. These boots may appear almost intact on the outside, which can be misleading. However, if they come into contact with water during the journey, they will start to open up and become unglued, potentially having a fatal impact on the trip.

Veteran hikers keep multiple pairs of hiking boots at home for rotation, and they need to clean and maintain them promptly after each hike. It's advisable to purchase boots produced in different years, with an interval of 2-3 years. If there are concerns about glue cracking or powdering, it's necessary to send them for repair and sole replacement in a timely manner. Nowadays, e-commerce platforms offer third-party sole replacement services. The cost of V-sole replacement service is approximately 380-400 yuan. Platforms like 1688 sell individual outsoles for less than 100 yuan, so you can buy them and have a technician replace the sole yourself, keeping the cost under 200 yuan.

When purchasing hiking boots, be sure to pay attention to the production year. It's best to choose those produced within the last 1-2 years. For older production dates, even if they are cheaper, please exercise caution before purchasing, unless you are willing to bear the risk.
The preservation environment for hiking boots is crucial. If they are not worn for an extended period, they should be cleaned, placed in a vacuum bag with a drying agent, and stored. This is especially important in humid and mold-prone regions in the south.

Be prepared for any contingency during the journey

When embarking on a long journey, it is advisable to carry bandages, nylon ropes, and glue with you for emergencies.
If only part of the outsole is detached, try to temporarily reinforce it before continuing. In case the outsole of your hiking boots falls off on the way, plastic tape is a very good emergency solution. Tie the tape tightly along the gaps between the outsole teeth, but be careful not to squeeze the top of your foot too tightly.
Alternatively, use strong tape (such as electrical tape or climbing tape) or bandages to wrap and secure the sole onto the upper of the shoe, focusing on wrapping the forefoot and heel. You can also reinforce the shoelaces by wrapping them around the sole and tying them tightly to increase stability.
If there is quick-drying glue (such as super glue), clean the surface where the glue has been opened, apply the adhesive, and press and fix it for 1-2 minutes. Note that low temperature or humid environment may affect the effect. There is a risk of secondary glue opening, so it is necessary to cooperate with the above binding solution for reinforcement.
These methods should help you last until the next drop-off point or supply station.

If there are no reinforcing ropes or straps nearby, one can only resort to using tough branches, vines, or sturdy grass stems to tie up the sole of the shoe.

If the sole is completely missing, elevate the cushioning layer and wrap the foot with socks, clothing, foam cushions, or even plastic bags to avoid direct contact with the ground.
Reduce stress, adjust your gait, and use undamaged shoes or the heel to apply force, avoiding excessive bending of the forefoot.
Adjust the itinerary plan and assess safety risks. If the terrain is steep (such as gravel slopes, icy or snowy roads) or the weather is severe, prioritize descending. If you are close to the destination and the road conditions are gentle, you can proceed slowly.

Collaborate as a team, seek help from teammates, borrow spare socks, tape, or share supplies (such as using backpack straps to reinforce shoes)
