Material of the outsole of running shoes
Reading times:84  Update time:2025-03-18
Basically, they can be mainly divided into two types: natural and synthetic soles.
1. Natural soles include natural leather, bamboo, wood, etc.
2. Synthetic soles include rubber, plastic, rubber-plastic composite materials, recycled leather, elastic cardboard, etc. Currently, the most common sole materials are rubber, PU, and EVA.
I. Rubber
◎Material Characteristics: Rubber soles have excellent anti-slip properties, are wear-resistant, acid and alkali resistant, heat resistant, and have good flexibility, making them less prone to deformation and breakage. Due to their high hardness, they provide good support for the soles of the feet.
◎Disadvantages: Rubber has a relatively high density, so it is heavy. Coupled with its poor elasticity, all-rubber soles may impose a significant burden on the soles of the feet in terms of weight and comfort.
◎Applicable Shoe Styles: Due to their excellent anti-slip and wear-resistant features, rubber soles are often used in shoes that need to be durable, such as hiking boots, work shoes, running shoes, and basketball shoes.
II. PU
◎Material Characteristics: PU is a high-molecular polyurethane synthetic material. Due to its light weight, softness, elasticity, wear resistance, and ease of processing, it is widely used in various types of shoes.
◎Disadvantages: PU has a relatively high cost, strong water absorption, is prone to breakage, the sole is prone to decay, and has poor breathability.
◎Applicable Shoe Styles: Due to its light weight, it is commonly used in various lightweight racing shoes, sandals, casual shoes, and other higher-priced shoe styles.
III. EVA
◎Material Characteristics: EVA not only has good softness and elasticity, but also is lightweight and has good chemical stability. Therefore, it is easy to color and process into shape. Coupled with its low cost, it is widely used in the market.
◎Disadvantages: It is not durable and has poor elasticity. After long-term use, it will compress and deform.
◎Applicable Shoe Styles: Due to its low price and light weight, it is the most widely used material in sports shoes and casual shoes on the market.

Therefore, from all aspects, different materials of shoe soles have their own greatest advantages and disadvantages. To say that any one material is absolutely good is not certain. However, we can choose which material is most suitable for which type of shoes. Although the shoe-making technology has been improving in recent years and various mixed-material soles are also common, when choosing safety shoes, we still need to select the most suitable ones based on our own needs to achieve the best effect.
