Do you know why?
The New York gold vault is the largest known gold reserve in the world, with approximately 497000 gold bars and a total weight of approximately 6190 tons as of 2019.
These gold were originally stored as currency equivalents, and depositors who stored gold could receive corresponding US dollars, but now the US dollar has completely decoupled from gold.
The vault has been storing gold since the 1920s, but most of the gold in the vault was deposited during and after World War II, as many countries wanted to store their gold reserves in a safe place at that time.
The current gold reserves in the vault are actually only about half of their peak, which occurred in 1973 when over 12000 tons of monetary gold were stored in the vault.
There is so much gold, so heavy that when building the vault, it was specifically excavated to bedrock before construction, which resulted in the vault now being 80 feet (24.4 meters) below street level and 50 feet (15.2 meters) below sea level.
These stored gold bars are cast into gold bars, each weighing around 12.44 kilograms, and the staff need to stack these gold bars.
Due to the slippery nature of gold or psychological factors of the staff, people carrying gold bars often slip off and get hit on their feet. Think about how serious it would be if a 12.44kg gold bar were hit on your leg.
To avoid unnecessary medical burden, every staff member moving gold bars in the New York vault needs to wear such safety shoes to work.

This safety shoe is a set of steel toed shoes designed specifically to prevent feet from being hit.
