Duck hunting camouflage was originally designed by a California horticulturist named Novell Gillespie to better conceal himself and approach targets while hunting ducks. During the Pacific War, double-sided printed duck hunting camouflage was used as the first camouflage pattern by the US military in military operations. The duck hunting camouflage used by the US military has two shades of green and yellow, which are respectively suitable for spring, summer, and autumn and winter warfare.

The herringbone arrangement was first used in the laying of ancient Roman floor tiles and the design of ancient Egyptian jewelry, with a locked arrangement that has strong pressure resistance. Later, it was mostly used in the textile of Italian men's coarse tweed clothing fabrics. USMC began to use it in military uniforms in the late 1930s.
